It has come to our attention that the Cargill Lab (Grainger 1293) is scheduled to be re-purposed.  This lab is reserved for IS majors and AISP members, and we would like to keep it that way.  We will be holding a board meeting on Thursday March 7th at 7:00pm in the Cargill Lab that will be open to all members and associates so we can discuss our options for trying to keep the lab.

What do Information Systems majors do?

Not everyone knows exactly what a major in “Information Systems” means, or why it’s important. The Business School’s website has a bit of information regarding the major. For example, here is a quick description what IS majors would be doing for a career:

Information systems professionals help clients address some of their most complex business problems through the effective use of technology.  They see pathways to solutions of highly complex technical issues and are key leaders in conceptualizing and sourcing the best solutions.   Information systems professionals collect, store and analyze information and data to assist organizations and departments in executing business initiatives and making informed decisions.   Additionally, they use hardware, software, technology infrastructure combined with input from internal or external clients to develop tools to solve and track business objectives.

Information SystemsOne of the career possibilities for an IS major would be an Information Systems Manager position. Information Systems Managers are responsible for planning, coordinating, and directing computer-related activities in an organization. They help determine the information technology goals of an organization and are responsible for implementing computer systems to meet those goals. Obviously, one would have to work their way up the career ladder just like everyone else, but once you’re there the pay is great (median $115,000)!

Greetings AISP Members and Associates,

We will be holding a general members meeting this Thursday February 28th at 7:00pm in Grainger 1070.  We would like to have all members attend this meeting as we will be discussing the election process for Leadership Positions, and the future of AISP.  Everyone is invited so bring friends if they are interested in joining.  If you would like to run for a leadership position, you must attend this meeting.  If you are interested in a position and can’t make it please email Nick at nwelker@wisc.edu for more information.  As always, there will be free food, and you will receive your free AISP T-shirt (we are waiving the fee now, so if you paid the $1 for a shirt just talk to a board member to get it back).  The meeting will not run for longer than 1 hour, but we will be hanging around for a bit after so feel free to stay and chat.

AISP is whatever we want it to be, so please attend the meeting to express your thoughts and opinions.  Your participation is critical for the success of our organization.

Hope to see you there,
